I have to confess, I can't really say I properly cooked this recipe, considering I made Mangú, but none of the 3 side items, also known as hitters (Golpes in Spanish).  Most plantain dishes I come across involve fried plantains, so it was a nice change of pace to try some boiled plantains instead.

I didn't edit the recipe for the Mangú itself too much, besides scaling it down to 2 plantains and 2 tablespoons of butter instead of 6 of each. I don't know exactly how much water I put into the Mangú, but that's more personal taste, so I'd just say to add and test the consistency until you're happy with it. The pickled onions are a must to make alongside by the way, since they offer some much-needed acidity in an otherwise somewhat bland dish.

If you've never had plantain before, I'd recommend making a fried plantain dish like Tostones, Maduros, or Mofongo. If you have, however, this is a really refreshing dish to make. The biggest strength of Mangú definitely is its ease of making. All you have to do is boil some plantains and then mash them with butter, then slice and pickle some onions. This might be the simplest dish I've made thus far. It's pretty hard to mess up.
